CREATE supports courses, programs, and informal student-led outreach efforts across San Diego and campus that get UC San Diego students into the San Diego education community and informal outreach efforts– many of which are designed by students. CREATE helps UC San Diego students to leverage their knowledge and energy in outreach and service learning to support local K-16 students and educators. Some outreach programs are credit-bearing courses, some are paid opportunities and others invite student participation more informally.
CREATE at UC San Diego coordinates and leads 4 quarterly San Diego Hub meetings per year to leverage the resources of UCSD, DSEC, and the SD STEM ecosystem. These meetings bring partners together to leverage and multiply regional equity-minded and collective educational and community impact.
To connect and sustain work within the San Diego computing ecosystem, and to amplify efforts and leverage partnerships within the DSEC consortium in the San Diego region, NCWIT will partner with UCSD CREATE on a K-16 focused Regional Initiative in San Diego.
Research Experiences for Undergraduates is critical in reinforcing the STEM identity of future scientists and researchers. Recognizing the importance (and limited access) of such experiences, we work to provide equitable access to such opportunities. One such program is STEMULATE. STEMULATE is a summer research program catering specifically to community college students. Over an eight-week period, selected participants work as Visiting Scholars in university labs under faculty mentorship. The program emphasizes hands-on research, community engagement, and professional development. STEMULATE serves as a model for inclusive research experiences, fostering confidence and academic goals in its participants.
Both the Barrio Logan and Southeast San Diego Science & Art Expo's are inclusive and annual art, science, and culture fairs that welcomes families from around San Diego. Some demonstrations include the engineering of lowriders, the science of tortillas, a robotics playground, music, and more!
Cultivating tomorrow’s leaders and educators, investing in opportunities for high school students is critical. As such, we strive to provide paid learning opportunities for local high school students - thus, preparing them to meet the needs of the local workforce.. As an example, our OFFERS HS program helps prepare students for future STEM opportunities and foster community engagement. It provides paid internship opportunities for high school students from various backgrounds in San Diego over an eight-week period, where interns undergo training in STEM subjects, leadership, and professional skills.
Recognizing the importance of STEM exposure at an early age – the in-person camps were designed for 3rd through 5th graders, and focused on getting students excited, engaged and comfortable with learning that anyone can be a scientist or engineer!
We have co-designed, evaluated, and run education programs with many local, regional and national organizations and initiatives. Here’s a recent list. See our Annual Reports and our blog for many more examples. Contact us for consultation.
