Young Scholars Educator Resources

What are important dates and deadlines for Young Scholars?

  • PARENT ORIENTATION MTG (mandatory): Wednesday, June 18, 2025, 5:00-7:00PM (mandatory) (in-person):
    • Purpose: For parents to meet educators, ask questions, learn where drop off and pick up is, etc.
    • Location: Jeannie Auditorium, UC San Diego Main Campus
    • Directions: https://maps.app.goo.gl/KVBtV5CETc9RL91S7
    • Parking (NOT covered by UCSD CREATE): Lot P302, Lot P303, Scholars Parking Lot
    • Note: Educators who attend the two-hour parent meeting will receive an additional compensation of $100. This will come as a separate check from the final paycheck but will follow a similar timeline for deposit as indicated below for the regular course compensation.

What is the compensation process for me as an educator?

Each educator will receive $1200 per individual course taught (e.g. Week 1 AM or Week 1 PM). For example, if an educator teaches BOTH an AM and a PM section, they will receive a total of $2400. A letter of invitation confirming payment disbursement date and payment amount will be issued at a later point in time.

All stipends are to be disbursed (meaning received by you) by Wednesday, July 30, 2025If your stipend is not received (as a direct deposit) after that date, please contact Darren De Leon (d1deleon@ucsd.edu) for stipend troubleshooting.

In order to receive payment, educators must register with UC San Diego’s PaymentWorks. UC San Diego’s PaymentWorks YouTube video, “How to Register as a New Payee”, can be found here: Registering as a New Payee. Any and all delays to PaymentWorks registration will lead to a delay in payment disbursement.

CRITICAL: If you have previously performed contracted work, or identify as being a former employee, with UC San Diego, please email Darren De Leon (d1deleon@ucsd.edu) as soon as possible as payment processing can otherwise take longer for prior employees.

What is the sign-in and sign-out procedure for me, as an educator?

Arrival and Sign-In

  • All Educators must sign in upon arrival at the designated check-in location
  • Use the provided sign-in sheet or digital system to record your name, course, and time of arrival.

Departure and Sign-Out

  • Before leaving campus, Educators must sign out at the same check-in location, noting the time of departure.
  • Notify the director or designee ASAP if leaving early or for any emergency.

What classroom supplies are already provided to me?

A box of standard classroom supplies will be included in every classroom. This box should remain in the classroom and will be used by BOTH AM and PM classrooms. It should never be removed. Do not let students remove the items from the classroom. Items in this standard materials box will include:

  • Sets of washable markers for 20 students
  • Pencils
  • Pens
  • Scissors (6)
  • Construction Paper
  • Glue Sticks
  • White board dry eraser and markers
  • Blue wall tape roll
  • Plain white printer paper (2 reams)
  • Paper towels
  • Wet wipes/lysol wipes
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Sticky back name tags (for day one)
  • Post-it notes
  • Power strip – for classrooms with heavy tech/device use

Are food and/or beverages provided to me?

No food or beverages will be provided to students or educators during the Young Scholars Program. Students who choose to attend both AM and PM programs during a given week will be provided a lunch area to enjoy the food and beverages they bring with them. A separate designated area will be provided for students with food allergies.

We will discourage all-day attending students from purchasing lunch on campus. Educators who teach all day should also bring their food with them to save time. There are some food options in our building, however, if educators choose to purchase on-site.

Limited refrigeration and freezer space are available on the CEB 3rd floor CREATE office, a microwave and a coffee maker are also available for educators. These are not available for students.

What is the administration of medication to students policy?

No Supervision or Administration
  • Staff will not supervise or administer any medication, including over-the-counter or regular medications.
Self-Administration Only
  • Students must be fully capable of self-administering their own medications (e.g., inhalers, EpiPens) without assistance.
Parent/Guardian Responsibilities
  • Parents must provide written authorization and ensure that their child understands how to properly use their medication.
  • Medications must be delivered to the program in their original, labeled packaging.
Medication Storage
  • Medications can be stored in a secure, accessible location designated by the program. Students must retrieve their medication independently when needed.
Emergency Protocols
  • If a student experiences a medical emergency, the director or trained staff member will respond using first aid, contact 911, and notify the parent/guardian immediately.
Communication with Parents
  • Parents will be informed of this policy at registration to ensure they understand the program’s limitations.

What is the room configuration for my course?

Classroom Assignments

  • All UCSD CREATE Young Scholars classes will be held on the UCSD main campus. Your class’s specific location will be shared with you by the end of April 2025. Be assured we are in the middle of reserving space on the campus, primarily in the area of the Social Sciences Public Engagement Building (PEB) for all K-8 programming.
  • Note: High school student courses (9-12) may be held at a different location, but also on the main UCSD campus, this is TBD.

Classroom Type

  • All space reserved will include tables and chairs (no lecture halls), and will be media accessible (screens and connective ports), speakers, and will have white boards. You will need to bring your own laptop computer, and connectors to use the media provided. If this is a problem, please contact Dr. Susan Yonezawa syonezawa@ucsd.edu and/or the Director who recruited you.

Devices

  • In rare circumstances, your course might require students to bring their own devices. This will be made clear when the course is advertised. If that is the case, we will provide charging strips in your classroom materials box. Devices will not be provided to students directly.

Going Outside

  • If you decide you want to take your class outside to another part of the campus for a period of time, that is fine, but you MUST notify by text (858-531-7608) the YS Director (Chanelle) before leaving and upon returning to your classroom. Please provide time and location. This is so she is aware in case a parent needs to pick up their child early.
