Description:
How can we offer students engaging academic writing experiences that allow them to explore the relationships between text, self, and world? The ISAW program will address these issues, help build connections between high scool and college teachers, and illuminate your mission as a teacher of writing. Join us as we work together to truly prepare our students for the various demands of college-level reading and writing assignments. We will look at how to help students respond to an essay topic, understand and use texts, develop an effective argument, organize ideas, anticipate readers' needs, choose the right level of language, and vary sentence structures. We will begin this summer and continue working through the 2008'09 school year to support the implementation of new strategies through an inquiry approach to the teaching of writing. Expect to take risks, engage with colleagues, and reflect as we demonstrate and discuss processes that empower all students, including English language learners and struggling students, to meet the demands of college-level work.

UC San Diego

San Diego Area Writing Project teachers share the belief that writing is a process. Young Writers' Camp engages students in that process and allows them to discover their own style, voice and potential.

Our goal is that each young writer, regardless of skill level, has the time and space to experiment in a variety of genres while developing creativity and confidence.

--Each day our daughter came home she was eager to share what she had done at camp. She would often, out of the blue, just share her thoughts for her next story or poem. She had a wonderful time.

--Our son had an excellent experience at camp. He has learned to express his inner thoughts and developed his writing skills. It is a joy to see this . . . thank you!
