This workshop introduces teachers to the concept of mentor texts, using high-quality writing from a variety of authors to support, engage and enable all learners to take ownership of their writing. Drawing from classroom resources such as reading anthologies, textbooks, picture books, novels, and newspaper articles, participants will: discover how to take advantage of the time and effort already invested in reading instruction to teach writing; explore a variety of ways that learning to write from writers can be immediately implemented into writing lessons; learn how to use rich, well-written texts to differentiate writing instruction for English learners, GATE and special needs students, struggling and reluctant writers—ALL of the students in your classroom; collaborate with colleagues to plan and scaffold writing instruction using your own classroom materials. Participants will learn to use mentor texts to: analyze texts for the qualities of effective writing; pinpoint specific revision strategies and tools; teach grammar and writing conventions; explore characteristics of specific genres to inform students writing. We will use mentor texts to support the implementation of classrooms-proven strategies through an inquiry approach to the teaching of writing. Expect to write, engage with colleagues, and consider the possibilities classroom reading offers student writers.

 Young Writer's Camp

Young Writers' Camp - Summer 2009

July 27 - August 7, 8:30a - 12:00p

Monday-Friday @ UCSD

YOUNG WRITERS' CAMP IS FULL FOR 2009 - Waiting list is closed for 2009

Grades 3-10
UC San Diego

San Diego Area Writing Project teachers share the belief that writing is a process. Young Writers' Camp engages students in that process and allows them to discover their own style, voice and potential.

Our goal is that each young writer, regardless of skill level, has the time and space to experiment in a variety of genres while developing creativity and confidence.

--Each day our daughter came home she was eager to share what she had done at camp. She would often, out of the blue, just share her thoughts for her next story or poem. She had a wonderful time.

--Our son had an excellent experience at camp. He has learned to express his inner thoughts and developed his writing skills. It is a joy to see this . . . thank you!
