Service Learning Opportunities

Want to tutor or intern in a local school, or support younger students who come to campus for learning opportunities?

We have lots of ideas for you. You can:

  • Join the TMC 198 Thurgood Marshall College/CREATE School Partnership Program to volunteer or intern at The Preuss School at UC San Diego and Gomers Preparatory Academy. Each school has called the service provided by UC San Diego tutors and interns one of the most important contributions UC San Diego makes to supporting the region’s students, and many undergraduates have called the experience a key aspect of their undergraduate education.   • The ERC/CREATE Math Tutor Corps brings together several UC San Diego organizations in order to support math students at Lincoln High School. Students take a 2-unit course (ERC 89) and learn how to tutor mathematics from some of the county’s best high school math teachers (recipients of the prestigious Math for America San Diego Master Teaching Fellowship). While they are taking the course, students serve as tutors for Lincoln High School students in math classes for at least four hours each week. Students work primarily in algebra and intermediate algebra classes at Lincoln, courses where the greatest need exists. The UC San Diego students acquire real-world skills as math tutors while making an important contribution to a UC San Diego partnership school. Contact ERC/CREATE Math Tutor Corps Program Coordinator (mathtutorcorps@ucsd.edu), for enrollment information.
  • Inspire and empower local high school students. Enroll in CONT 150A College Academic Mentoring Program (CAMP), a collaborative effort between Muir College, UC San Diego's Department of Education Studies and CREATE's Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP). The four-unit course readies UC San Diego students for onsite academic advising and mentoring to students at Castle Park, Clairemont, Gompers Preparatory and San Diego High Schools and King Chavez Academy. Gain real-world experience working with a diverse student population, including first-generation college applicants historically underrepresented at schools of higher education. CAMP students meet once a week to learn the theoretical framework of academic outreach, mentoring procedures and academic advising techniques and six to eight hours per week onsite at a partnership high school. New this year: students may continue at their school site all year through a secondary, 2-unit class. Contact Mario Aguilar, EAOP Assistant Director (meaguilar@ucsd.edu) for enrollment information. 
  • Join the Hands On Lab and try out teaching science to K-12 students. UC San Diego undergraduates earn four units while working with graduate students and educators to co-create, facilitate, evaluate and improve hands-on science lessons with high school students. Gain teaching experience and meet other undergraduate STEM majors interested in working with kids. The Education Studies132 Hands On Lab is made possible from NSF CAREER funding for the Devaraj Lab at UC San Diego as part of the CREATE STEM Success Initiative. Offered in Winter 2016.   • Join Education Corps, out of the Center for Student Involvement, to volunteer in a host of local schools. Contact EducationCorps@ucsd.edu.

  • Sign up for PAL. CREATE supports the Partners at Learning sequence in UC San Diego's Department of Education Studies, which sends tutors/interns into many schools across the San Diego region through engaging coursework. Advanced PAL courses also support undergraduate students to work in schools as action researchers. Contact Melissa Wolf, PAL Coordinator (mawolf@ucsd.edu) for enrollment information.
  • Explore La Clase Mágica by enrolling in the course, volunteering, or interning. The 6-unit course is designed to provide students with an intense experience combining theory and practice in the study of child development. As part of our philosophy, our approach to learning is practice-based. Connecting undergraduate students with children in neighboring communities allows them to put theory into practice and more rapidly gain an understanding of the city where they reside. Students become researchers, chronicling their experiences in ethnographic field notes, data surveys and final papers. They also become more enlightened about low income communities, digital identity and voice, and sharing cross-cultural experiences.   • Makeba Jones (m3jones@ucsd.edu) and Luz Chung (mchung@ucsd.edu), Lecturers in Education Studies and CREATE affiliated faculty, are teaching new, advanced Partners at Learning courses in Education Studies, supporting undergraduate students to work in schools as action researchers.
