Teacher Education and Professional Development

UCSD CREATE offers extensive professional development opportunities for practicing teachers to increase their subject matter expertise and increase the effectiveness of their pedagogical practices for the diverse student populations of San Diego County.

  • American History in the Schools Program
    The American History in the Schools (AMERICANHITS) program is a partnership between UCSD and the San Diego County Office of Education, the Constitutional Rights Foundation and the Huntington Library. It is funded by the Teaching American History program of the US Department of Education and runs for three years, from 2004 to 2007.It is a professional development program for teachers of grades two through five and eight in the area of US history. The goals of the program are to improve the teachers' content knowledge, increase their repertoire of lively teaching strategies, and to create professional and online networks.   • California Science Project
    SEASAND (Science Education Association of San Diego) is a site of the California Science Project and is a joint project between UCSD and Point Loma Nazarene University. We are committed to the goal of improving science education for all children in San Diego County – mainly by providing opportunities for teachers to enhance both their academic and pedagogical science content knowledge and by developing formal partnerships with schools and districts to improve student learning.

  • California Reading and Literature Project

    The mission of the California Reading & Literature Project (CRLP) is to provide high quality, standards-based professional development in reading and language instruction to help ensure that every California student PreK-12 achieves the highest standards of academic performance.



  • San Diego Area Writing Project
    The San Diego Area Writing Project (SDAWP) is one of the seventeen sites of the California Writing Project (CWP) network, and one of the 180 sites of the National Writing Project (NWP) network, dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of writing. Since 1977, the site has maintained an exemplary reputation in providing professional development for teachers, schools and districts in our service region of San Diego and Imperial counties.


  • UCSD History-Social Science Project

Professional development activities are offered during the schools' academic years, intersessions, and summer months.
